Expertise and experience of biofuels and bioliquids

MBP has been active in biofuels and bioliquids since 1999. We established our first biofuel storage and factory facility in 2002. Our biofuels and bioliquids, are carbon neutral, cost-efficient alternatives to mineral oil based heavy fuels, light fuels, and diesel and are derived purely from biogenic waste or residue sources.

We work closely with a wide range of energy producers and are noted for our outstanding levels of service and quality. We have extensive experience and expertise in sourcing, supplying and using biofuels and bioliquids for a wide range of installations.

MBP provides expertise in product technical knowledge, incineration technology and legal and fiscal compliance – key competences in this fragmented and rapidly developing area of the energy industry.

An overview of the biofuels and bioliquid market

An increasing number of countries in the world are committed to reducing global warming and greenhouse gases by decreasing their dependency on fossil fuels. Several countries have set national targets for renewable energy and are busy implementing policies to reach these targets. Biofuels and bioliquids are important elements in reaching these targets as they can often be used in existing facilities and equipment.

The EU has addressed public concern about the adverse consequences of producing biofuels through the introduction of the Renewable Energy Directive (RED) in 2009, recently amended by the Directive 2015/1513. MBP supports the RED and is fully committed to supplying biofuels and bio-liquids complying with the requirements of the RED.

MBP is aware of public and customers’ concern about using primary oils which could otherwise be used for human consumption. Through our Sustainability policy MBP is committed to using biofuel and bioliquid produced only from waste and by-products, not from primary oils.

MBP biofuels and bioliquids are used in a wide range of applications – either pure or blended with other fuels – including road transport, electricity, combined heat and power (CHP) plants as well as process heat generation facilities, across Europe, North America and Asia.

The supply chain challenge for biofuels and bioliquids

The biofuels and bioliquids industry is still a young industry – with many teething troubles. There are many new and small players; a lack of product standards;  and suppliers and customers lack product knowledge and experience. The result of this has been a number of disappointed and let down customers.

Biofuels and bioliquids are difficult to source on long-term contracts. Most customers want to have long-term supply contracts which give supply security. However, a large part of the international market for biofuel and bioliquids is a short-term market only. Most biofuels and bioliquids suppliers are unable to secure a long-term sourcing contract and sooner or later the sourcing problem of the biofuel/bioliquid seller will become the customer’s problem.

This is because it is difficult to source a steady supply, and quality, of biofuels and bioliquids Most biofuel and bioliquid customers have experienced problems with changing product quality and suppliers’ inability to deliver consistently. This is often due to an unfortunate combination of insufficient quality control, lack of long-term supply contracts and a general instability in supply industries.

“MBP Solutions has improved the value and distribution of our co-products through their world-wide distribution network. We greatly appreciate their service-oriented USA/North America office to provide local support for access to global markets."

How the MBP approach addresses these challenges

MBP SOURCING

MBP has unique, long-term relations with an increasing number of suppliers of ingredients for our biofuel and bioliquid products. This puts us in the unique position of being able to guarantee long-term contracts. When you buy biofuels from MBP, you can be confident that MBP will honor the contract, as you are not just dealing with a middleman. With our nine offices worldwide, MBP has unique and unrivalled sourcing coverage, giving our customers the advantage of supply certainty as well as cost efficient products.

MBP logistics

At MBP we know that our customers expect deliveries on-time so that they will not experience an outage due to lack of biofuel. This may seem obvious but it is not something you can take for granted from all suppliers in this emerging industry. On a daily basis, our team in charge of logistics management and customer service ensure that our products are delivered on-time, and according to all agreements. Delivery on-time requires sufficient buffer storage. Accordingly at MBP we analyze and manage the total supply chain to ensure that on-time delivery happens all the time.

MBP quality

MBP supplies products with a defined quality profile for all deliveries. A stringent quality control program ensures that all orders are produced to defined quality standards before delivery to the customer. This guarantees the customer a problem-free application.

MBP’s unique technical skills

Customer requirements are becoming more and more specific in response to more demanding environmental requirements regarding heavy metals, ash, sulphur, nitrogen and more. Our deep chemical knowledge combined with our technical competence ensures that by-products from various industries are turned into homogeneous biofuels which match our customers’ requirements precisely.

MBP products

MBP has a wide range of biofuels with various specifications. At MBP we work closely with our customers to understand their specific needs and their technical capabilities in detail. Then, based on our vast experience of the application of biofuels and bioliquids in different settings, we can recommend a suitable solution and set up a corresponding supply chain.

In order to ensure a completely safe process, MBP will arrange trial deliveries as well as recommend competent third party technical consultants if required.

MBP Fatty Acids Ethyl Esters

This product may be used for power generation and/or heating but should be further processed to meet the customer’s required specification as some parameters do not meet the current guidelines in EN14214.

MBP Fatty Acids Distillation Residues

This is typically used as a substitute for heating oils, and can be applied either as process heat/steam generation. Available in vegetable or mixed origin and in various rheological characteristics.

MBP Methylester Distillation Residues

This is typically used as a substitute for heavy fuel oils or diesel and can be applied either as process heat/steam generation or ( given the low acid number) in stationary CHP (combined heat and power) Units. Available in vegetable or mixed origin.

MBP High Melting Point Distillation Residues

This is  typically used as a substitute for heavy fuel in very robust burners, where the user has the equipment to handle a fuel with a high melting point, high levels of ash and some contaminants.

MBP Bioliquid Blends

This bioliquid is blended specifically to meet users’ requirements. Available in vegetable or mixed origin.

When you buy biofuels or bioliquids from MBP you profit from our decade-long experience, expertise and knowledge. You can be confident that the agreed volume and quality will be delivered on-time.
